ABOUT CARLOS / ARTIST STATEMENT
Carlos Serbia was born in Gainesville, Florida. He is the second of 5 siblings. His father was attending the University of Florida, while his mother was taking care of him and his older brother. After his father completed his school work, the entire family returned to Puerto Rico, where Carlos grew up from the age of 2 up until the age of 23. He began to develop an interest for the arts as a young child. Music, poetry and drawing became part of his daily activities. He pursued studies at the Liga De Arte De Puerto Rico and soon began to blossom as a poet and musician. Carlos began to draw forms and shapes very early. He filled the walls of his bedroom with drawings representing the various rock bands he listened to as a child and teenager. He would not rest until the drawings were perfect, taking the necessary time to achieve a perfectly symmetrical drawing. Beyond the classes he took as a child, Carlos has been a self taught artist. He learned to play the guitar, congas and to write music, focusing most of his time to these and to write poetry. He would continue to draw using primarily pencil, pen, ink and pastels. His color drawings began to take shape and a style of his own began to emerge. Carlos later started painting watercolors, but soon focused on acrylics, as he discovered the wonderful textures he could give to his geometric forms. "My inspiration comes from music, the lush colors and fresh spirit breezes of the Caribbean, and complexity of the female form." In the mid-1980s Serbia established himself in Connecticut, where today, his art continues to evolve with the ever-changing inspirations in his life, as he begins to unveil his original artistry to the public.
