ABOUT CARLOS / ARTIST STATEMENT Music is playing in the background and there is an empty canvas or a blank piece of paper in front of me. With the melody and rhythm of the music, my mind begins to travel figuring out where to go, what to do. The canvas becomes my drum set, and at that moment I begin to feel the freedom and enthusiasm that painting and music bring to me every time. “I am music, and I translate my music into the canvas”. When I paint, I create a world that has exactly what I want and how I want it at that very moment. I do not think about right or wrong, good or bad, content or gloomy; I just let myself go into this awesome and uplifting journey with no restrictions to express and pour my soul. I really experience sovereignty to its fullest extent. I began drawing as a young child and was immediately drawn to lines and forms. Triangles, squares, rectangles, circles and perfectly drawn lines were part of my repertoire. I recall the wall next to my bed filled with drawings, mostly of logos of my favorite bands and signs/symbols of my teenage years: black & white checkers, Yin & yang, etc. My experience as a percussionist is projected in the flow of my paintings. “Nothing moves without rhythm, and rhythm is art”. Music has been a big influence in my life. While growing up, I was exposed to many different types of music styles and rhythms, which today I work to translate to my paintings. Because I am an intense individual, in every sense of the word, red is the color that describes me best. Red expresses what is inside of me; expresses my passion and drives everything I do. I have a passion for life and love people. “Painting is a medium of profound understanding”. I always try to communicate soothing and optimistic emotions with my paintings. Although I may have my own feelings and thoughts about a painting, I want the viewer to come up with his or her own interpretation of the piece. But what is amazing is to find others that when looking at my paintings can see and feel what I tried to communicate. As an artist, there is no better feeling than to connect with the viewer, and that is my main objective, to make a connection. The observer may no like it; they may even hate it, but knowing that some kind of emotion was achieved is satisfaction enough to remind me and them, that we are indeed alive…we are indeed free.
